Literacy Activities
The facilitators collaboratively discuss the strategies to be done in the classroom by adhering to the language strands (listening, speaking, reading and writing). The students use research, thinking and communication skills to inquire and express greater depth and breadth of knowledge and concepts when they immerse a genre study on reading and writing fiction into the unit of inquiry.
In EYP, the students understand phonics, through play way method, during circle time they happily sing rhymes and action songs which build their vocabulary. Chatting away in funny voices as they flick through picture books, enjoying interactive eBooks together, listening to stories being told via video or audio and singing nursery rhymes can all spark communication and literacy learning. Essentially it is these ideas and questions the activities promote that create the foundation for developing reading and writing skills.
IB Kids Reading
In PYP, literacy is integrated with the central ideas linking the conceptual understanding of the genres and the writing process (information, persuasive, explanation, report, comprehension, letter writing and composition) reading materials and provocations, rubrics and assessments
They acquire knowledge through exploring nonfiction books and resources; (Project X , Nelson etc)in the library .They use hands-on manipulates like flashcards, pictures, puzzles etc, where they can discover a range of language arts such as exploring the basic elements of a story, determining the main purpose of stories, retelling stories with details, sequencing events from stories or research, drawing inferences, providing detailed explanations, comparing and contrasting points of view or characters, and arranging information from multiple texts, including informational texts. These challenging concepts become more concrete when students have the ability to create examples of them using their hands.
The students reflect on the field trips/guest lectures which happen every unit which gives them in-depth understanding in developing their communication skills.

Community Service
Service as action is an integral part of the programme at GIS, especially in the MYP community project. Action and service have always been shared values of the IB community. GIS Students take appropriate action when they apply what they are learning in the classroom and beyond, thereby striving to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a personal commitment to service in both the local as well as global contexts — making a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment. They did a Dengue Awareness Programme in a government school, educating the rural students on the preventive measures, symptoms and treatment methods for the same and distributed bottles of neem oil, which is a natural repellant for dengue mosquitoes. Also, they imparted adequate knowledge to the people in the nearby localities on the importance of using clean water. In addition to all this, they also actively participate with much zeal in activities like organic gardening, where they learn about the pernicious and detrimental effects of usage of environmental unfriendly chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
They have also Whoever you are, you have the power to reduce all adverse impacts of globalization for yourself, the people you love and for the world. On this note, they join hands together as they initiate all activities to create awareness and provide effective solutions, as an expression of care and responsibility towards accomplishment of a better world. The students of GIS make a personal commitment and inspire a change that resonates and mobilizes action, long after the day has passed.

Field Trips
Field trips are a way of enhancing classroom learning by making real world connections. The use of educational field trips has long been a major part of the education programming for both youth and adults. Well-planned field trips can be a valuable tool in the extension agent’s educational toolbox. An educational field trip can be an integral part of the instructional program. Good field trips provide participants with firsthand experience related to the topic or concept being discussed in the program. They provide unique opportunities for learning that are not available within the four walls of a classroom.
Field trips are designed so participants can easily make connections between the focus of the field trip and the concepts they are learning in the rest of the educational program. Field trips provide a common ground with more-advantaged and less-advantaged children to have some of the same experiences. Thus our school focuses on Field Trips to enhance the students to understand the Unit better. Our students visited various places like Dhakshinachitra, Mahabalipuram,Utopia, the Forest Park , the Zoo, Grammathil Oru Naal, Birla Planaterium,Various government offices to understand how the government plays an important role in our life. Needless to say, all these activities made a greater impact on the students and enabled clearer understanding of the unit related.

Visual Art
GIS offers a unique curriculum of visual arts. It motivates students to understand the need to succeed in a competitive industry which involves art in building the community. Students get to showcase their creative skills in different types of art forms such as drawing, painting, art history, crafts, video, fashion, sculpture..etc.
Art & Culture
Arts are integral to the learning at GIS IB. We offer a wide range of opportunities to ensure that students are stimulated to think and to articulate their thoughts in new ways through a variety of media and technologies. Learning about and through arts is fundamental to the development of the whole person, promoting creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving skills and social interactions.
At GIS, arts are identified as Visual arts and Music. Arts education is incorporated both into the Primary and the Middle years programme. It will also be an integral part of the IBDP Visual Arts programme. Regular visits to museums and art exhibitions further expand their horizons and expose them to art from other times and artists. Arts promote attitudes such as empathy, expression and appreciation. There is ample opportunity to enhance the observation skills that enables one to identitfy uniqueness and commonalities that connect us. Our art programmes nurtures passion for a specific art, it also inculcates aesthetic sensibility and creativity in students.
